TUSD held a community meeting in the Wakefield Cafeteria to present the idea of re-opening the school in the Fall of 2020. An audience of approximately 60 people were on hand to hear the presentation including film crews representing several news outlets, former students, parents, and politicians. Bill De La Rosa made an impassioned pitch for the reopening of the school and for the inclusion of as many local students as possible. The plan proposed would make the new Wakefield a lab school without borders, focusing on project-based learning and building on a strong partnership with the University of Arizona.
